Willmott Dixon to build £27m first stage of Oxford eco-town

Willmott Dixon will build the first stage of an eco-town in Oxfordshire in a contract worth £27m.

The contractor will deliver 94 zero-carbon homes out of a total 393 in North West Bicester, for the first phase of A2Dominion and Cherwell District Council’s project, called the Exemplar.

The NW Bicester scheme is one of four eco-towns given the green light in 2009 by the government. It hopes to deliver 6,000 eco-homes in total, in timed phases.

Skanska shakes up infrastructure management team

Skanska UK’s infrastructure services manager Deirdre Murphy has been tasked with developing a 2020 business plan for the contractor.

Ms Murphy, who has managed Skanska’s infrastructure services operation since 2008, led the acquisition of Atkins’ highways services business, which brought an additional £180 million annual revenue to Skanska UK and increased the workforce by 1,200 people.

The managing director of Skanska UK’s civil engineering arm, Greg Craig, will run the infrastructure services business.

Mr Craig has worked on projects such as the M25 widening with the Highways Agency and will be expected to grow its market share.

Carillion's 'human approach' wins Royal Docks scheme

Property developer Hub Residential has won detailed planning permission for its 360-home development in London’s Royal Docks, which will be built by Carillion.

The scheme, named Hoola, received consent from the London Borough of Newham late on Tuesday night.

Speaking to Construction News before the scheme received the green light, Hub Residential development director Steve Sanham described his vision for the two-year-old company and the contractors he wants working on its schemes.

Highways Agency investigates 15-foot hole in M2

The Highways Agency is carrying out emergency safety investigations into a 15 ft-deep hole that has appeared on a central reservation on the M2.

The hole, between junctions 5 and 6 of the M2 near Sittingbourne in Kent, measured around 5 m by 2 m and is 15 ft deep.

The Highways Agency said it was working hard to investigate the hole, alongside its contractors, Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald, which manages the M2 on behalf of the Highways Agency.
